WorksBiography
I like how from one series always appears a new series. I like to feel that the best series I have is the one I am working now.
Gabriel de la Mora (b. 1968, Mexico City, Mexico) is a conceptual artist who lives and works in Mexico City. After studying architecture in his native city, de la Mora elected to shift his practice to painting. His work responds to a self-imposed constraint to create “paintings without paint.” Instead, de la Mora uses salvaged quotidian materials like feathers, egg shells, vintage photographs, and the worn soles of shoes, adhering these fragments with surgical precision to museum cardboard to create minimal and often near-monochrome compositions.
De la Mora’s process is highly technical and relies on processes and materials (such as a specific glue he formulated himself) painstakingly developed over multiple years. The resulting composite pieces are accompanied by spare, cryptic titles generated according to the artist’s own methodology, and their materials are transformed into abstract planes or patterns such that identifying them often requires reference to a checklist. While at first glance flatly graphic, de la Mora’s palimpsest-like works convey the subtle effects of the passage of time. The artist’s use of repetition is informed by Zen philosophy, in which recurrent actions are understood as meditative gestures.
