Site aléatoires avec 6 personnages (Random site with 6 figures) is a striking acrylic and paper collage example from one of Jean Dubuffet’s final series before his death in 1985, Sites aléatoires (Random sites). A web of deep blue lines connects six cartoon-like figures under a layer of radiant red paint.

The vivid abstraction of the work is characteristic of Dubuffet’s final works, in which the artist increasingly moved towards bold, vibrant colours and simplified figures. As he wrote at this time, ‘I want my street to be crazy, my broad avenues, shops and buildings to join in a crazy dance, and that is why I deform and denature their contours and colours.’

A similar work from this series is currently on view at the 2020-2021 retrospective Dubuffet, un barbare en Europe at the Musee d’ethnographie de Genève, Switzerland. Other works from the series are held by the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Fondation Dubuffet, Paris.
