Executed in bright slashes of scarlet, black and rich burgundy red, Site aléatoire: lieux habités (Random site: inhabited places) dates from one of Jean Dubuffet’s most significant late series, the 1982 Sites aléatoires (Random sites).

The present work on paper exemplifies the wild scrawl of Dubuffet’s brushwork in his final years of life, as the artist increasingly blurred abstraction, portrait and cityscape in his paintings. Throughout the Sites aléatoires series Dubuffet used this gestural, unrestrained brushwork to reflect the turbulent inner landscape of the mind.

Works from the series are held in permanent collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the Fondation Dubuffet, Paris.
