Alex Katz in Sea, Pop & Sun

Fondation Carmignac, Hyères, France
25 April - 1 November 2026

Alex Katz features in Sea, Pop & Sun at Villa Carmignac, an exhibition celebrating Pop Art's sun-drenched, sensual side against the backdrop of 1960s–70s freedom and social change.

Named after Serge Gainsbourg's provocative hit, the show evokes the South of France as a symbol of liberation and transgression during the sexual revolution. Here, Pop Art trades urban imagery for the sky, sea, and summer itself—sensual, even cosmic—while still acknowledging its consumerist roots and the disillusionment that followed unchecked hedonism.

Featuring over 80 works (15 from the Carmignac Collection), curated by Dr. Dieter Buchhart and Dr. Anna Karina Hofbauer, the exhibition pairs Pop icons like Lichtenstein, Warhol, Strider, Axell, and Raysse with contemporary artists extending the movement today. Across painting, sculpture, photography, and video, it captures a spirit of radiant joie de vivre—aware of its contradictions, yet still reaching for freedom.
