Bringing together almost forty large scale paintings made over four decades, Unfolding Color traces the development of Simon Hantaï’s practice and its place within postwar abstraction. The exhibition highlights Hantaï’s innovative approach to painting, particularly his use of pliage (folding), through which he manipulated the canvas before applying paint. Once unfolded, the process creates unexpected patterns and areas of unpainted canvas, bringing together colour and reserve within each work.
