Tone brings together a group of artists exploring the expressive potential of black, white and the full range of values between them. Beginning with photography’s origins in the gradual accumulation of light, the exhibition considers how artists across photography, painting, drawing and sculpture use tonal variation, contrast, shadow and light to construct form and rhythm. Paul Anthony Smith is among the featured artists, whose work contributes to the exhibition’s wider examination of tone as both a material and expressive language.
