Since emerging in New York’s downtown art scene in the 1980s, Smith has created an influential body of work that explores the human body, the natural world, and the connections between the physical and spiritual realms. Through an experimental approach to material and form, Smith examines themes of identity, mortality, transformation, and interconnectedness. Her work has been the subject of major exhibitions internationally and is held in the collections of leading museums worldwide.
