• This online presentation introduces a new series of works on paper by Turkish-born, American-based artist Hayal Pozanti, on the occasion of her second solo exhibition in the UK, A Dream That Rhymed With Mine, on view at Timothy Taylor through 24 October.

     

  • Pozanti’s practice explores the relationship between abstraction and the natural world. Working in oil pastel on Sennelier pastel paper, her studies translate observations of her surroundings into fluid compositions of organic, biomorphic forms. Made en plein air, the studies emerge from the artist’s attention to the landscapes and vegetation surrounding her home in rural Vermont. Rather than depicting nature literally, Pozanti distils its rhythms, colours, and sensations into a personal visual language of recurring shapes and forms.

    The studies serve as the foundation for Pozanti’s larger paintings, whose compositions are expanded and manipulated at a larger scale. Applied by hand and blended with the fingers, the oil pastel creates a tactile surface in which colour and form merge and flow into one another. Swelling shapes drift, overlap and transform across the paper, evoking flowers, bodies, and landscapes while remaining open to interpretation. In these small-scale works, Pozanti’s exploration of biomorphic abstraction becomes immediate, bringing into focus the relationship between observation, gesture, and painting.
