Eddie Martinez: Gumshoe

Fosun Foundation, Shanghai, China
10 November 2026 – 3 January 2027

The Fosun Foundation will present Gumshoe, a solo exhibition of nearly one hundred paintings, sculptures and works on paper by American artist Eddie Martinez, spanning two decades of his exuberant and instinctive approach to abstraction. Drawing on his lifelong practice of observational and automatic drawing, Martinez combines abstract and figurative forms with a distinctive personal iconography, incorporating recurring motifs such as flowers, skulls, toys, tennis balls and cartoon-like figures.

The exhibition offers an expansive view of Martinez’s evolving practice, tracing the ways in which imagery from his extensive archive of drawings is repeatedly reworked, layered and transformed across different media. Working with oil, acrylic, spray paint and silk-screen ink, Martinez creates compositions that move between spontaneity and deliberation, making the familiar strange and allowing forms to emerge, disappear and reappear.

The exhibition title, Gumshoe, refers to Martinez’s process of following a trail through his own visual history, continually returning to past imagery to discover new possibilities. Alongside recent paintings and three large-scale sculptures, the presentation brings together rarely exhibited early works and works on paper, revealing the connections between different periods and series across his career. Curated by Robin Peckham, Gumshoe marks Martinez’s return to China following his first mainland solo exhibition at Yuz Museum in 2019.
